DeSoto Sheriff Joins Teen’s Efforts in Promoting “Blue Forever” Program

When family friend and Shreveport Police Officer Tim Prunty was fatally shot while in the line of duty, 18 year old Kellie Abbott wanted to do something to  help increase the safety of our police officers. For several years on Memorial Day weekend, Ms. Abbott volunteered to work with the Shreveport Police Department’s
Downtown group at Mudbug Madness, a popular Shreveport festival. The SPD group helps provide much needed equipment for the mounted and downtown patrol
unit officers, and Ms. Abbott was eager to help in any way she could.

Community Bank Announces the Addition of Dr. Gil Rew to the Board of Directors

William E. Dorroh, President and Chief Executive Officer of Community Bank of Louisiana announced the addition of Dr. Fred Gil Rew to the Board of Directors of the local 112-year-old bank. Dr. Rew, a successful dentist in DeSoto Parish, is married to Susan Rew and together they have 2 daughters, Rebecca Rew Brittan of Charleston, South Carolina and Julie Rew of New Orleans, Louisiana. Originally from Lake Charles, Dr. Rew graduated LSU with a BS in Zoology in 1974, entering LSU dental school and graduating in 1978.

December 31 is growing closer as Louisianians get ready to ring in 2014. DeSoto Parish residents are no different as they get ready to celebrate right here at home, attending the Second Annual New Year’s Extravaganza right in their own back yards. The New Year’s Eve fund raising event for The Clista A Calhoun Center, which will include dancing, great food and music by Billy J and Louisiana Razzmatazz is the talk of many, with tickets being purchased from as far away as El Dorado and Strong, Arkansas and Baton Rouge.

The DeSoto Chamber of Commerce hosted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on December 19, in Stonewall. The business offers climate control storage in several sizes, with the smallest being 5 X 10 on up to 12 X 24, with a Drive-up Service in two sizes 10 X 10 and 10 X 15. They also offer parking in a 12 X 30 space for various vehicles.

Northwest Louisiana Technical College – Mansfield Campus held their Fall 2013 Commencement on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the Desoto Parish Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Gus Hall, Financial Advisor with Edward Jones, was the guest speaker. Mr. Hall first congratulated the graduates on their initiative and foresight to further their education. He asked them to look in the mirror every morning and say, “Today is the first day for the rest of my life.” His advice to the graduates was to get used to hearing the word “no” and to be persistent in their endeavors in looking for a job.

Governor Jindal Appoints Sheriff Arbuckle to Council of Peace Officer Standards and Training

On December 3, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal appointed DeSoto Parish Sheriff Rodney G. Arbuckle to the Council on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). The council is responsible for developing and evaluating the curriculum of mandatory basic training courses for municipal officers, deputy sheriffs, state police, wildlife agents, and all other peace officers defined by state law.

DeSoto Chamber’s Relay for Life Tree Waiting for Donations

The ladies of the DeSoto Parish Chamber of Commerce and Tourist Bureau are  pictured hanging specialornaments on one of the Christmas trees in their
offices. Stop by and make a donation in honor or in memory of a friend or loved one that has been affected by cancer, and hang an ornament representing that person. All proceeds will go to the area cancer Relay for Life.
